This wasn't what I expected. Sections were politicized and full of the author's opinions, both in wars and history but also in analysis of public policy in the US and the UK. I stumbled around with some of the British words that were critical to the crimes, boot for trunk of a car, for instance. How did Dahmer not make it into this book?

As the title says it is all about crimes around the world which have shocked us and made us wonder 'How could this have happened?'. I felt sometimes it went into too much technical detail but the chapters (one per crime) were shortest and I could read one every time I picked up the book. Tended to try and remember what I was doing about the time the crime happened.

This book details a number of notorious crimes.I found this book quite depressing – seeing the awful things that people are capable of. But thankfully / hopefully these types of crimes are relatively unusual.
