Reluctant at first, Fish soon finds himself more at home on the sea than on dry land. He befriends his fellow pirates and naturally makes a few enemies just by being there. This one started out very strong for me - appealing characters, plot, writing etc. Plus, pirates! Gotta love pirates.Later on, there were a number of times that the dialog or writing felt off. I know I won't remember specifics if I don't write them down. The one that looms biggest in my mind was when Fish, Nate, and Nora go hunting on Turtle Island. This incident has the benefit of passing along a cool fact - but it was jarring. Basically, it felt like the scene was there JUST to get that nifty [...]

It reminds of when I was at sea myself, last year. I wonder if Fish misses his brothers at all, being from such a fun sounding, big family though? I understand if he belongs at sea, but I'd miss my family if I stayed forever and never looked for them.

The book I read was Fish. The author’s name is Gregory Mone. It was published in January of 2011. Inc published it. This book falls is a fiction book bout pirates and how the story of a farm boy falls into place. The genre of this book is an action and adventure book with lots of clues to the mystery. If you know a lot about pirates or you like pirates then this is a great book for you. This book is a one of a kind because there are no sequels to it. This book is a very easy book to understan [...]

This is probably a pretty good story for an upper elementary child. It is the story of a boy raised on a farm who goes to the city to get a job. He's working to get money to help his family buy a new horse. While working, he ends up on a pirate ship searching for treasure.

4.5 stars for this pitch-perfect pageturner about the most civilized pirate captain ever and his somewhat scurvy crew So close to 5 stars!

  • Debbie

This was a great book. The reading level feels more middle school, but deals with an elementary aged child. A perfect read for my high students!

Fish is tiny and weak and not very good at working the land. When his father takes him to the city to work for his uncle as a runner/delivery boy; Fish is excited to be able to contribute to the family. However, things don't always work out the way we plan and Fish ends up working on a pirate ship. A well written adventure with some twists and turns that require a creative mind and a steady heart.

Did you know there are both good and bad pirates? In Fish by Gregory Mone, when Fish (whose real name is Maurice) is forced to join the crew of The Scurvy Mistress, he doesn’t know one kind of pirate from the other. He also doesn’t care. His sole mission is to retrieve the bag of gold coins which Nate had stolen from him. When the head pirate Cobb decides that his crew will sail their ship to lay in wait for a freighter bound for America, Fish launches his own “raid”. He finds the gold co [...]

Maybe it was because I read it while waiting for two hours in a crowded doctor's office waiting to get a shot for pneumonia, but I just kinda found this book boring. Fish's outlook on life was quite clever and enjoyable, though.

I don't want people to think that a 3 star review means that it wasn't a well written book. This might be the time for me to clarify my rating strategies, since we are beginning a new year and I am trying to be more consistent with updating my account. I feel that I should rate books on an absolute scale, because I find it difficult to judge a novel by standards other than what I consider to be complex literary technique. Tales may be told simply enough for a child to understand them, yet have [...]

I first heard about Fish on BoingBoing, where Cory Doctorow gave it a very nice review. He writes: Chock full of real historic curiosities about pirates, sly humor for grownups, excellent action scenes and general quantities of swash and buckle, Fish is a great, self-contained addition to the canon of fun pirate fiction. Perfect for young readers, even better for reading aloud at bed-time, thanks to the plentiful cliff-hangers. (link)That's a great review, so I don't need to say more by way of r [...]

Reason for Reading: Read aloud to my son. He loves seafaring tales, especially with pirates, while I, myself, am also a seafaring adventure fan, though pirates are not necessary for me.Both the 11yob and I enjoyed this book very much. It has everything you expect in a sea adventure. Pirates, mutiny, treasure hunts, ship battles, a treasure map, walking the plank and oh so much more. One element that is a lot of fun is that Fish, the main character, does not believe in fighting so to survive the [...]

Maurice is the fifth child and youngest son born to the Reidy family on a small farm in Ireland. It becomes evident quite early that he isn't cut out for farm work. He is a good, peace-loving boy who accidentally discovers he has an amazing affinity for water and he swims every chance he gets. This earns him the nickname of Fish, which will serve him well in years to come. When he is about twelve years old the family horse dies which means they have no way to work their entire farm. Fish, as the [...]

This book is about a boy called Fish. He was called Fish because of his rare talent to swim. One day he and his brothers were rough-housing and Fish was thrown into the lake where he started to swim. Fish's family horse died and he was sent out to town to gather money for his family. He got a job as a messenger from his uncle. On one of his more important jobs his message was stolen from him, on his attempt to get it back, he found himself on a pirate ship. He later made friends with the deck sw [...]

This was another book I picked up at the warehouse as possible holiday gifts for my students.I had several students indicate that their favorite genre was mystery. That's never been a personal favorite of mine, so I grabbed anything at the warehouse that seemed even vaguely mystery-like. This one mentioned following clues to search for buried treasure, so I figured that counted as close enough.I was surprised by how much I liked this book! Fish was a delightful MC, brave enough to sneak onto va [...]

I thought Fish was a pretty good book. It was about this kid named Maurice who's nickname is Fish because he is really good at swimming. He lives wth his mom, dad, and his 4 brothers and 4 sisters and works on a farm. One day his family gets low on money and his parents send him to his uncle's house to work and earn some money. He would send the money he got to his family. His uncle gave him an important task to deliver some mysterious coins, but it gets stolen by pirates. He stays with the pira [...]

Fish, by Gregory Mone is a compelling story about a boy who is captured by pirates. This boy has some very special talents and the the plot does not go the way you expect it to. I have read fish about five times and it still captivates me every single time. But, I do think that one of the reasons I like this book so much is because I’m very interested in it’s topic. This book has an action packed plot and and every chapter ends with suspense. Some might even say it has to much action and tha [...]

Avast me hearties, an EXCELLENT pirate novel sails the seven seas! It’s called FISH by Gregory Mone. You will like the main character, Fish—nicknamed so because he’s a great swimmer. You will like the friends he makes on this adventure: Daniel, Nate, and Nora. You will enjoy learning about what it was like to live on a real pirate ship. This story takes place back in time and there was a lot of worked involved to sail a ship back then. Fish and friends swab the deck, of course, but they al [...]

Born into a big farming family in Ireland, Reidy would rather be swimming than planting vegetables and tending animals. He is sent to work for his uncle in the city to alleviate the family's misfortunes and quickly finds himself aboard a pirate ship on a treasure hunt. Fish (which is what everyone calls him) has to scrub the skivvy, keep his distance from the first mate who hates him, and learn to not-fight for his life. My 6-year-old loved this book. She suggested I give it 500 stars. I found i [...]

Fish was content with his life on the farm with his family in Ireland. But when financial troubles hit, Fish has to go to the city to work for his uncle. While making an important delivery, Fish is robbed. He chases down the thief to a boat in the harbor, only to find himself among pirates. Before he knows it, he becomes a part of the crew. Fish hates his life at first, but gradually makes friends, and learns who to avoid. Fish's wits may be the key to helping the captain find a valuable treasur [...]

This was a really fun book to read, and I know that I'll be recommending it to library patrons. I liked the characters and the funny nicknames clearly relate to some aspect of their personality (or smelly feet.) For a pirate book, the conflict being between those on the ship who want to treasure hunt versus those who want to plunder was well-chosen. It's something that I haven't run into with similar titles. The only concerns that a parent might have are the numerous fighting scenes and prevalen [...]

This books story is very predictable. You know who the bad guy is from the second chapter, but I guess it isn’t a mystery book. I love all of the characters in the book as they are very unique and have wonderful personalities. There are actually a lot of characters in the book, so it’s hard to remember every single one of them. It was easy for me to figure out how the book was going to end once I found out what the problem is, but to those that are younger, this might not be so obvious. Even [...]

My 9-year-old son attended a reading by the author and we bought him the book. He read the first 100 pages the same day and finished it a couple days later. He loved it (loved it!) and wanted me to read it too. Fish tells the story of a 12-year-old Irish boy who ends up having an adventure among pirates. It reminded me of the kinds of stories I read back when I was 9 or 10 years old myself. It's fast-moving, easy to read, and it's easy to identify with the main character who is nicknamed Fish be [...]

Fish is a fantastic action and adventure book. Fish a young boy who is an incredible swimmer has to go to the city to work as a messenger to help support his family. When delivering a purse of odd coins he is robbed by a boy who is a pirate. He swims to the pirate ship and is brought aboard. Soon he becomes a non-violent pirate. He learns the coins are a map leading to an ancient treasure and that the first mate scab is leading a mutiny. And worst of all is the wicked old woman of lady swift and [...]

What I find most interesting about this book is the fact that Fish has a conscience and quite a strong sense of right and wrong. When he first finds himself on the pirate ship, he tries really hard to get the pouch back so he can complete the task he was assigned by his uncle. This task proves impossible and he struggles with what joining the pirate crew requires of him. He manages to hold onto to his honor and his life, despite a strong dislike of fighting. Like many pirate books, treasure is a [...]

I enjoyed this book. It gave me a new look at pirates. There are 2 kinds; the ones who only want to raid other ships and don't care who they hurt, and the treasure seekers who would only steal from other ships to get by until they find a treasure. Fish is the young hero. He stops the mutinous first mate from taking the ship and he finds the treasure and he has only been a pirate for about 6 months! Those parts combined were too happy for me. I like a more realistic story, I guess. My question aft [...]
