This is a lovely book, full of sorrow and joy. Because it's so short, it takes no time to read; yet I was surprised to see that I was reaching the end. I had to slow down to savour the lyrical writing, not wanting it to be over already. I found myself identifying with each of the characters - all of them depicted completely, but showing their character flaws and strengths with a kind grace. I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Harbour View, Binnie Brennan's prize-winning novella, closely resembles—in structure if not intent—a collection of linked short stories. The novella’s six untitled chapters are set either completely or in large part in a nursing home overlooking Halifax Harbour. Each of the chapters is narrated from the point of view of a different character: a resident or staff member of the facility. As we might expect from a work of fiction that concerns itself with elderly men and women and those who c [...]

This book is a heartbreaking look into the lives of a number of residents at a Halifax nursing home, along with a couple of the staff. Each chapter of the novella is written from a different point of view. At only 105 pages it would be a quick read anyway but I couldn't put it down! There's lots of Halifax mentions, from traffic on North Street onto the bridge, to the ferries passing each other in the harbour, to a family home on Portland Street (I can picture the big old houses while I read sin [...]

Harbour View (2009, Quattro Books) deals with the small inner world of a Halifax nursing home (called Harbour View Centre) in which each character adds notes of wistfulness, sadness, lightheartedness, even tragedy to be combined in a singular musical tapestry that reaches the heart and the mind. Ms. Brennan's follow-up volume of short stories, A Certain Grace (2012 Quattro Books) and most recently, a novel, Like any Other Monday (2014, Gaspereau Press) are equally as impressive, firmly establish [...]

Read upon a recommendation. It was a quick easy read and I really enjoyed it. The separate stories of residents of a nursing home are intertwined with a few characters (mainly employees). It was one of those books that left me with a full range of emotions - sorrow or happiness at times for the residents, and thankfulness for the caring of staff. It was also very interested the way Nova Scotian history was brought up through the stories of people's lives. This book showed love, patience, compani [...]

Harbour View is a lovely collection of short stories by a fine writer of the genre. Binnie Brennan is a fine writer and always a joy to read. As publisher of Existere - Journal of Arts and Literature, I am proud to have been the first to publish one of her short stories.

This novella left me wishing to know more about the characters--four residents and two staff workers at a long-care home in Halifax. I especially loved the Halifax setting and the glimpses of familiar landmarks. A very quick read that is quickly engaging.
