another drawing-review, but not a drunken-drawing review this time. (although the end results are pretty much the same)i am desperately trying to get caught up on my reviews this week - there's a stack of books here on my windowsill with their pages turning yellow from the direct sunlight, some having been sitting there for over a year waiting for me to get to them. i suppose i could just not review them, but that would only add to my already very well-developed sense of personal failure, which [...]

If somebody asked me who my favorite horror writers are. I wouldn't be able to answer. Most people will probably say Stephen King, Clive Barker, maybe even H.P. Lovecraft. I know absolutely nothing about the horror genre, except for the obviously famous writers that excel in the genre. But I have never read enough horror to consider it a genre for me to delve into or crave to read. I pay attention more to the name of the writers and the style of writing. Honestly, I think my only answer would be [...]

Bleak Studies Of Messed Up PeopleIf you hadn't guessed by the title, this book is not designed to make you happy. It's all various shades of bleak. "Baby Hater" is probably the most upbeat story in the collection, and it's about a woman who vents her frustration at certain societal pressures by punching babies in the face. Particularly impressive, considering Hunt is often grouped in with bizarro and horror writers, is that she doesn't play up the shock value. She doesn't revel in the gore. You' [...]

If you are looking for stories full of happiness and life and everything Disney, then C. V. Hunt is probably not the one to run to. She doesn’t just dwell in the shadows but in a deep dark cave. With a flashlight. But no batteries. Yet that doesn’t mean Misery and Death and Everything Depressing doesn’t have its moments of humor albeit very dark. It is also full of deep reflection and makes you think a bit about what an odd deal this thing called “Life” is. Something that is often defi [...]

I've had many people insist I read something, anything, by CV Hunt. So I did. Ans they were right Hunt has a way with words. She has a knack for tapping into a reader's emotions. creeped out, spooked and freaked were all things I felt after reading the stories on this collection. The premises are twisted, the settings are real world and the thought experiments that take place within the stories are breath taking. In short, if someone recommends you read CV Hunt, don't hesitate, take that advice. [...]

A solid blend of pitch-black comedy and genuine creeps, C.V. Hunt's short story collection offers a wide variety of misery and death and everything depressing, as the title suggests (and man, I love that title). Some of the real standouts here are "No Room for a Child", a haunted house story that brings on the willies with a backyard cemetery and a house of mismatched rooms (and clearly the foundation for her novel "Ritualistic Human Sacrifice"), and "The Quarry", which is about a couple of home [...]

Picked this book up at STC '17 because I wanted to buy something from the Grindhouse stand, because it was pretty much the coolest looking stand at the convention. Wound up grabbing this one on a lark, and Jesus, was it a good call. Human Contact was friggin' excellent. I don't know if Baby Hater needs to be praised further, but I will. I laughed my fat man-tits off. I can't wait to get my hands on more of her stuff.

I’ve had a few of C.V. Hunt'S titles on my TBR list for quite some time – (eg: HOW TO KILL YOURSELF, THANKS FOR RUINING MY LIFE, OTHER PEOPLE’S SHIT, etc I wish that I had already grabbed at least one more so I wouldn’t have to bring a new author to bed tonight – things tend to get awkward when you just grab that book by it’s dust jacket, and drag it into the bedroom…C.V. HUNT’S writing reminds me of Debbie Goad, and the articles she wrote for ANSWER ME!. (if you’re not sure, Y [...]

A woman who punches babies as a political statement. A Mother Teresa burning in hell. A robbery gone horribly wrong. A very odd meeting with a prostitute. This fast-paced story collection does indeed live up to its name: these stories are about miserable characters who struggle to find their place in life. The highlight is "Baby Hater," a story that will likely offend many even though it holds plenty of intelligent and deep commentary about our society. This story alone is worth the price of the [...]

CV Hunt is dope. This is a great set of stories. It's a quick read but it is satisfying. There is a little bit of everything in there Horror, noir, humor, transgressive but it all blends together so well when Hunt writes it. Baby Hater is a great story and definitely my favorite in the book. CV Hunt knows how to make the banal interesting and make despair funny. I will definitely continue to read more of her work. Also this is just another awesome book from Grindhouse who consistently put out go [...]

I was thinking of giving this book 4 stars, but then I remembered the sheer, unadulterated joy of reading "Baby Hater," and I had to go for the fifth. This book has a wonderful balance of darkness and grim humor, painting a bleak portrait of the world in blackly comic cartoon. I enjoyed every minute of it. C. V. Hunt has phenomenal skill, and I look forward to reading more.

Shockingly despite the title this book made me really happy. I think that might mean there are problems waiting down the line, but for time being I'll chalk it up as a win. Its one of those things where you'll like it or you won't, but I definitely did and would recommend anyone to give this a shot.

Meh. On the one hand most of the stories were moderately interesting and some, like Baby Hater had some real potential. On the other hand, none of them were fully developed. They all ended abruptly. The writing was bland. All in all these stories all had a lot of potential but did not live up to that potential.

  • David Cluck

    Baby hatin'

  • Melanie Catchpole

A couple of the stories I expected more chapters but they abruptly ended. Apart from that I like the writing and story ideas. :)

  • John

Great book by one of new favorite authors.

  • Nick Cato

Story vibes felt like Lynch films. Made punching babies awesome.

  • Nick

Baby Hater has the greatest opening line of all time.
