    I found this book for a nickel at a thrift shop, the spine split and dust jacket missing. But I am a sucker for a police procedural, especially if it involves priest, nuns, or monasteries (or nunneries). Bottom line: it is not a beach book (unless you like lugging around a 490 page hard cover book), but it is a very enjoyable procedural, with twists and turns aplenty, some obvious, some less so.Edward Stewart was a moderately successful popular novelist beginning in the 1960s. This was supposed to be a gritty, gruesome crime novel, but I think grimy suits it better. You can see the dirt, but it’s smeared and indistinct in a few places.I liked this enough to want to leave you with a decent impression, so I’ll do my complaining first.
