I love Sally Watson's work so much, and re-read so many times growing up. And still to this day I think she writes some of the best strong young heroines out there. This is my personal favorite, which I was re-reading this week after a trip to Colonial Williamsburg which made the setting of this one particularly vivid, but they're all good. I honestly think that if you haven't discovered Sally Watson yet, you're missing out on a delight, and I really highly recommend. It is one of my great frust [...]

It’s so delightful to read books written for younger readers that don’t include vampires, werewolves, talking animals, magic, children having to fight each other to the death or aliens invading Earth. At a picnic over this recent holiday weekend, a friend complained to me about how awful today’s young adult fiction is. She’s trying to find something for her 14 year old son to read that doesn’t involve “fantasies or the damn world ending!” Realistic fiction, for young readers, is di [...]

Sally Watson is, in my opinion, one of the greatest writers to combine fiction and history, ever. Young adult or adult. Period. Her characters are well written, three-dimensional people. The plots are engrossing. Her dialogue sparkles. I jsut plain, flat out, LOVE Sally Watson's books.

Almost thirty years have passed since Colloden, and the end of the hopes for a resurgence of the House of Stuart. But a new generation of rebels is arising, irked by the regulations against their culture — the banning of the kilt and the bagpipe, amongst other things. When Lauchlin and her brother Ronald come up against the new commander of the local fort, the best solution is to send them away. All the way to distant relatives in Virginia. There they find another incipient revolt, but also le [...]

This is a young adult book and I grade it with that in mind. I remember reading this as a young teen and really loving it. I remembered quite a bit about it considering it had been nearly 40 years since I read it. This is set during the same time as Johnny Tremaine, but is set in Williamsburg, Virginia. A teen age brother and sister get sent to distant relatives in Virginia when their hotblooded anti-English ways get them in trouble on the Isle of Skye. In Virginia they arrive just in time to be [...]
