28 December 2012Unfortunately, the curse of Zombie Powder is that it will always be compared to the insanely popular Bleach. In fact, you're probably reading Zombie Powder because you are a huge fan (as am I) of Bleach. The stories are different, but it is obvious where Bleach got its beginnings.Picking up Zombie Powder, the one thing that stood out to me was how much the cover looked like the cover of Bleach, Volume 24: Immanent God Blues. So, naturally, I couldn't stop making the comparisons as [...]

3.5 stars!Battles, humour, challenges and character building! This is definitely an easy manga to sink into. I feel like I'll be more invested in the characters/story when I read more. For now, the concept is enough.

This volume starts off with Chapter 1: The Young Boy and the Black Right Arm.I'll write more when my editing mode hits.Happy Readings!Fly my Pretties! Fly!

Kubo's (Bleach!) first graphic novel, Zombie Powder is a wild western-flavored tale staring Gamma, a chainsaw sword wielding ultra criminal (but he's the good guy), super shooter, suit wearer CT Smith and Elwood, a kid who wants to bring his older sister back from the dead. The trio face down against the gangs who run the world in a quest to gather the 12 Rings of the Dead, which are said to create zombie powder, concentrated life force which can return the dead to life or make the living immort [...]

Like any manga, Zombiepowder does just enough to pull you in with its world, aesthetic, and badass hero, Gamma Akutabi. With a story revolving around mysterious drifters with weird talents, a bounty hunting community that communicates through Record LPs at local music stories, and a quest for rings that could revive the dead, all set in a spaghetti western world, it's a shame Zombiepowder didn't take off like it should've in the early 00's.

Everything I would expect from the author of Bleach. Action, Blood, Great Characters

  • Ruth Crook

Really interesting worldbuilding, I'm intrigued! Battles look pretty epic, and I want to read more!

  • Danielle Riggs

    Loved it! Want more!

  • Lilly Yagami Winchester

I love Gamma! He's amazing and awesome (also very funny)! I can't wait to read the rest of the series

Tite Kubo, Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand (ViZ, 1999)Tite Kubo is known these days as the author of Bleach, one of the best-selling manga of all time. Before there was Bleach, there was Zombie Powder, Kubo's first miniseries (it runs only four volumes; Bleach is now up over thirty). For years, it was damnably hard to find, but ViZ has taken pity on us Bleach fanatics and released it in America. Finally. In the first installment of Zombie Powder, we meet Elwood, a kid who has resorted [...]

Overall Rating: D-Synopsis: Created by Tite Kubo (creator of Bleach), Zombie Powder is an unfinished manga with a futuristic-western setting (not unlike Trigun). The main characters is Gamma Akutabi, a mysterious man wrapped in a past shrouded in enigma (or something). He is hunting the Zombie Powder, which supposedly can bring the dead back to life and give the living immortality. Gamma has mastered an art of fighting called Karin Zanjutsu (which normally takes 32 years to master) in only 4 yea [...]

at long last! i purchased a volume of Zombie Powder after wanting to for months! i was very interested in buying this as i was reading the last arc of Bleach and i really wanted to find out what indeed was Kubo's first ever story like. perhaps i just felt like getting away from the fail-boat of a final arc that Bleach was presenting me with and go back to basics. i'm glad i did toois volume sure brought back a lot of nostalgia from the earlier Bleach days, the art style, the jokes, sometimes eve [...]

A vaguely interesting premise by the creator of Bleach. While I found it interesting enough to finish, it seemed to be needlessly violent which kept it from holding attention for long. I might continue the series, but there are so many other things I want to read, that I just don't think I'll have the time.UPDATE: 6/9/17:After rereading this title, I have to say that I enjoyed it quite a bit more. Actually just started on volume 2, and have 3 & 4 on order at the library. It's not a bad serie [...]

  • Despair Speaking

This is Tite Kubo's work before Bleach and I can see how it paved way to it. There are some vague similarities and the art is the same as the first few volumes of Bleach. But they are quite different in their own ways.Zombie Powder is another of those so-so manga that didn't stand out much but weren't bad either. Its characters were okay but they didn't stand out. The plot was interesting but not unique. The story flow was smooth in the beginning but it became inconsistent and confusing later on [...]

I'm so bummed that this series is so short- I wish it continued!12 Rings of the Dead can bring people back from the dead and give eternal life- so it's only natural that people hunt these rings. Early on in the story, we meet Elwood, who is stealing to support his ill older sister. Enter Gamma Akutabi. Gamma has been hunting the rings so he can become immortal. Through a chain of events, they travel together, searching for the rings. We meet Gamma's partner, C.T. Smith and battle villains such a [...]

  • Julie

Thought I'd give this a try, being that Bleach is so awesome. I enjoyed it, although it's way more violent than Bleach. It's a Western-themed story (similar in setting to Trigun) where people are chasing after magical items - the Rings of the Dead. I thought the story was interesting so far and I liked the characters; I'll probably read the other three volumes, although I'm disappointed that Tite Kubo never finished the series.

  • Karaoke OK

[Series Length: 4 volumes / Read: volume 1]An earlier work from Kubotite, the mangaka for the quite popular "Bleach" series, "Zombie Powder" features very rough looking artwork and moderate action. It wasn't a series that grabbed my attention enough to induce me to venture beyond the first volume. However, if you're bored and looking for an action series in manga format, this title may fulfill your needs.

  • Dexter

My favorite kind of chars in my favorite kind of setting. Gamma Akutabi is a seemingly undefeatably seeker of the 12 Rings of the Dead, which, when united, can grant eternal life or raise the dead.Elwood is just a kid, but an expert pickpocket and determined to join Gamma on his quest. Which is awesome.

  • Cassandra

Yet another good little side manga that tite-kun has come up with^>^ i really liked this one the most because its totally well thought out and the characters sort of resemble the ones from bleach a little bit xD sad though that their is only a few volumes released out T_T but nonetheless i love zombie powder anyway xD

  • Jennette

By the guy who brought us bleach brings us zombiepowder. This is one of his first mangas. So i dont know how i feel about this series yeteres ton of action and battle scenes so its pretty intense this series revoles around this bad ass named gamma akutabi hes looking for these rings called rings of the dead and if he collects 12 of them he can either raise the dead or have eternal life.

  • Caroline

Elwood is a young man who wants to bring his sister back from the dead. He travels with two fighting men who are very strange but are looking for the "Rings of the Dead". If you find all twelve, you can get eternal life and raise the dead.

  • K.N.

This is the series I prefer over Bleach. I lost my faith in Tite after he dropped this project. The story was fun, action-packed, and with just the right amount of silliness. It's a shame he didn't continue it.

  • Melissa Middleton

A weird, yet enjoyable story. I love have Wolfina stops a gang rape (book 3 or 4, I think). You go girl! "People who use dirty methods to hurt others will be destroyed by methods that are even dirtier than theirs! That's what I call justice!"

  • Sarah ~Sehrenity~

Not as strong a story as Bleach, but still readable. In some ways, this reminds me of Trigun, but maybe only in that both are characterized by this alternate SF/Western mix of setting and steampunk to make up the worlds.

  • Jay

While not as compelling as the Full Metal Alchemist (a lot of fight scenes and I really read the graphic novels for the dialogue), it's worth reading. I've already acquired the second one from my library.

  • Amy

I got a very strong Bleach feel from this book but I was not as interested in the characters. It's possible that later books could grow on me, but I'd need someone to really recommend this series for me to bother.

  • Paula Greenfield

This about a boy and a man who meet and want kinda the same thing. They want zombie powder. It will raise the dead and make the living immortal.

  • Lucinda

A little confusing actually. I'm a big fan of Bleach, but this didn't quite measure up. It was good though, don't get me wrong.
