The author's heart was in the right place, but this book is kind of a mess. Much of it takes the form of a basic timeline of more or less chronological events that skims the surface of the Dead's history - this happened, this happened, this happened - providing a bare-bones outline without going into very much detail or context. Anyone already versed in the band's lore and history isn't going to learn anything new or relevatory, and anyone not familiar with the tale wouldn't be getting a deep or [...]

Some great stories in here but it's a total mess.

I tried, but I just couldn’t make it through this one. There is good general information about the band’s career and dozens of appropriate quotations from band members and support staff, but the fanzine style of writing that peppered in lines from Dead songs (“When I first saw my date ‘I knew without asking she was into the blues.’”) left me irritated. The narrative is broken up by interludes that trace a couple's experience at a concert in 1989 where they compete with each other ove [...]

A quick and uncontroversial look at the Dead and their milieu. I particularly enjoyed the sections on the milieu - there are better books about the band itself (Phil's autobiography "Searching for the Sound", for one). The blooming concert romance that framed the narrative was entirely hokey and added very little, but being a hokey romantic Deadhead myself, I nonetheless found myself thinking I'd have loved to have stumbled into a situation like that. The contrast between this fairly straightforw [...]

Required reading for Grateful Dead fans and hippie survivorsThis is book details not just the rise and revolutions of The Grateful Dead, but the history of the Beat and Hippie movements, in which the band figures so prominently. I had bought a number of Dead records back in the day, but now I'm listening to many more recordings from studio and their endless touring Odyssey, and digging the truth in them like a squirrel savoring acorns from a huge, discovered hoard. The Dead were not only the sou [...]

Enjoyable, noncontroversial, not-especially earth-shattering read. The switch from narrative to timeline kept catching me by surprise.
