Will tear your insides up and out, not in a swift movement, but rather something that yanks and aches and pulls building in tension, preparing you for the snap. This is a collection which I had to read, then put down, then return to when steeled - and even still it made me raw.I was particularly struck dumb by the poem "Children," which is so evocative and painful in the way it draws out the family trauma of slavery.

Allyson Paty (Editorial Intern, Tin House Magazine): Shane McCrae’s Blood. Where blood is familial bond and lineage, carnage and injury, McCrae’s poems engage American slavery—and the cultural inheritance of slavery. Violence instructs the prosody, and McCrae’s use of line is singular and galvanizing. An awesome book, in the true sense of the word.

As Tin House put it, an awesome book in every sense of the word. Showing the oppression of Black Americans with the clarity, emotion, and strength that the subject deserves is not an easy task. I have seen it in "Time and Distance Overcome," in "Bunk," and in few other pieces of literature so far. Blood, in 94 pages, many of them overwhelming empty and white, tears me apart. Shane channels the voices of Black individuals in Civil War and Reconstruction-era South with such skill. His use of line [...]

"And blood sprayed from the arteryA roselike if the Lord had stoppedmaking in the middle of mak-ing redrosesand never made their boundaries"- from "Brother"stunned by this entire collection, and especially: "Heads", "Mercy", "To Punish", "Priscilla", "The Crowd Shouted and Hollered"

Not sure how to rate this. It was very powerful, so I'd give it 4 stars. It was very unconventional poetic format, which I'm not sure helps or hinders its power. Mostly it sickens me, and I know that it should—what Americans have done is sickening. My ancestors were historically present. Racism continues today. It's truly sickening.

Between 4-5. A very strong collection, but it did not have the same impact on me as Mule. Want to go back and read both again.

  • Taylor Napolsky

This didn't have enough variety for me. It felt repetitive throughout the book.

  • Laura Neu

Objectively, this is a good book. It's well-written and Source material is weaved in flawlessly. However, I really have a hard time getting into the style.
