    When I first saw this book, I thought it might be rather short and simple and mostly pictures. I was thrilled to see that I was wrong. The author offers a detailed explanation of each object, often relating the objects to other historical facts of the time period they came from.I learned a lot of things from reading this that I had not been aware of before and I liked that the book had a somewhat conversational tone. A short story on some aspect of the war is told as each object is presented, in roughly chronological order.The result is a unique and lovely way to tell pieces of the history of the Civil War.     I want to say this before I say anything else: The informational writing was good, but I just was not interested in most of the topics this book included. I had to force myself to read most of the book(which in itself says enough) & it took me months to read. I found some points very interesting, because I like reading about the civil war, and like I said before, the writing was good. I just didn't find the majority of this book captivating.

    I really liked this book because it made me feel like I was actually visiting the society in person. Also, with some of the background information provided in each of the chapters, I felt like I was on a guided tour with someone that has a passion for Civil War history.

    When I saw the title of this book, I started thinking about the kinds of items that would be covered. I thought the items would all be somehow related to the military. The authors of this book, however, took a much broader perspective, making this not about "just" the war, but about the times as well. I was also expecting a broad overview.     I saw this book on the library’s new arrivals website and thought it might be interesting, so I put it on hold. I am not a huge Civil War history buff, but I love museums and their various items and the stories behind them, so I figured this book could be like a museum on paper.     You would expect such a book to be superficial and certainly it doesn't have exhaustive detail on all aspects of the Civil War. But what it covers is well researched with great amount of fascinating detail. This is becoming a trend, for museums to make their collection available for photographs of events but it is one I must say I like.     Excellent historical book. Some of the 50 items were boring but the author presented some history that I did not know about so I was still very pleased.It was hard to follow at times which meant I had to reread some of the pages and the pictures were a bit too dark to really appreciate. When describing the pictures and pointing out items within it I could not find them because of how dark it was.Overall this book was a good source of hidden history. Giveaway Book

    I was expecting a skinny Kovels' Antique Price Guide to Civil War Memorabilia but what I got was a great chronological look at the U S Civil War told through stories connected with relics housed at the New York Historical Society. Each object gets a chapter of its own, some more interesting than others, but all and all flags, buttons, diaries, footlockers, drums, photos, uniforms, paintings, pikes and shackles make Civil War history come alive.

    Holtzer has picked 50 objects from the collection of the New York Historical Society. They range from the mundane to the transcendant. He begins with a pair of slave shackles sized for a child and has other things related to slavery. There are diaries, broadsides & flags. Last is a manuscript of the Thirteenth Amendment to officially end slavery; Mississippi was the last state to ratify it: in 1995!

    *I won The Civil War in 50 Objects from GR.This bookI've never been interested in the Civil War, but I decided to give 50 Objects a try. Totally worth it! Each object is explained clearly and really gives the humanizing, haunting aspect that so many period novels try for but few achieve. Why? Because there are really "50 Objects", and this is not a fiction book.Sometimes, real life CAN be more interesting than fiction.

    A fascinating book, and a must-read for any Civil War or American history buff. My only complaint is that there’s nothing in the pictures to help the reader put the artifacts into perspective size-wise. Dimensions aren’t included in all the accompanying explanations and it’s hard to judge the size of some of the artifacts displayed just from the picture.

    I enjoyed this book. The author uses artifacts from the NY Historical Society to tell in-depth stories, not only on the objects themselves, but also the wider implications the surrounding events had on the country and the war at the time. I liked the way he did this in chronological order from the start of the war to Lincoln's assassination.

    Essentially a catalog of select NYHS holdings. Using material objects and ephemera to tell the story of the Civil War is a worthwhile approach and reasonably well executed given the extent of the NYHS collection. The writing is sometimes lackluster, especially in comparison to Eric Foner's elegant introduction, and the page design is less-than-appealing.

Utilizing paintings, photos, artifacts, letters, and other ephemera in the collection of the New-York Historical Society as a springboard, Harold Holzer has crafted 50 fascinating essays on a variety of Civil War topics. It's a brilliant approach to understanding the nature of the war.

    I was a bit suspicious of this approach, fearing too much trivia. Instead I found fascinating essays launched by artifacts and documents, but going far beyond them to establish context. This is the dangerous sort of book that can launch you into reading 20 others because your curiosity is nudged. But then isn't that the whole point of reading?

    Like a museum inside the pages of a book: full color plates throughout the entire book and plenty of text to accompany each item. A thoroughly engrossing read the entire way through, I loved this. Highly recommended if you are a history buff!

    This book is like a walk through a small museum with a knowledgeable guide. Rather than confining himself to the battlefields, the author includes items that tell the story of the war politically and privately. Though in places dry, the subject material alone made this an absorbing read.
