The horns screamed for battle, and from all sides, men responded On a day two thousand years ago, in a country we now call France, horses rear, throwing centurions off their backs The Romans crouch and run away like scared dogs, their red cloaks flailing behind them Shrieking to match the horns, tribal warriors burst from the bushes to give chase Emyn stands in a riverThe horns screamed for battle, and from all sides, men responded On a day two thousand years ago, in a country we now call France, horses rear, throwing centurions off their backs The Romans crouch and run away like scared dogs, their red cloaks flailing behind them Shrieking to match the horns, tribal warriors burst from the bushes to give chase Emyn stands in a river that seems shallow and still as death then the warriors run past, holding their swords and axes high The screams and horns stopped Emyn looked around The sun shone on the curious faces of the king and his guests As they had since she was a child, the ghosts had transported her soul to someplace far away A battle begins, she announced Emyn, a Celtic peasant, possesses a gift at once terrifying and rare she hears the dead Spirits warn her of Caesar and his legions who rampage through her homeland seeking power, gold, and slaves But the ghosts can only talk, and they don t always tell the truth In the end, Emyn must rely on her own stubborn courage to meet her destiny.

4.5 starsReviewed for InD'Tale magazine. The review can be found here. This is a story about a girl who comes from the territory of what today is France. The time - one word - Caesar. I'm sure you're all familiar with this picture:[image error]It is accurate in the sense that Caesar did conquer a big part of Europe. Unfortunately there was no magic potion to save the tribes.I did try to insert some levity with the whole Asterix & Obelix reference, but beware - the book is truly heartbreaking [...]

Vickey Kall’s novel, Death Speaker, is a literary treat. The protagonist, Emyn, has the ability to hear ghosts speak. Unfortunately, they do not always tell the truth. In the first chapter, the author writes: “And that was when she began, really: the day she learned that she could speak to and for the dead. That gift would carry her far from home to speak before the wise and the foolish alike. After that day, Emyn heard the word, Gutumaros, whispered when she passed: Death Speaker.” Emyn l [...]

Vickey Kall has a gift for description and imagery, and she uses it to good effect in her first novel, Death Speaker, a tale of ancient Gaul (France) during the time Julius Caesar is conquering it (remember veni, vidi, vici from your high school Latin?). Caesar didn’t say that in connection with Gaul, but he did divide Gaul into three parts (Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres.)Emyn, a Celtic peasant living in Gaul, has the unique ability to talk to dead people, and this gets her audiences [...]

A Gaulish girl, Emyn, who can speak with the dead, is given advice and visions by ghosts of Caesar's Gallic war as he pushes across the land. Her voice is sought after by chieftains and kings, even meeting the anti-Roman leader Dumnorix at various points, and his pro-Roman brother Diviciacos once (he doesn't listen to her). I actually really enjoyed reading the first half, but I felt sometimes it went way off topic in the second half and I didn't understand what the ending was all about very wei [...]

A story of Caesar's conquest of Celtic tribes through the voice of a young girl as she learns what her nightmares mean. The author takes us on her journey, from apprenticeship with the village wise woman as she grows into a beautiful young woman. The names are authentic from that place, the battles are true. We care about her and her family. They try to escape with the foreknowledge she affords and are betrayed. The spirits of the dead speak to her but she cannot change the outcome.

For the sake of fairness, I will not be rating this book. I couldn't finish the entire thing, something which I do not do lightly. I just couldn't really get into the plot or enjoy the characters all that much. The idea seemed really good though, and I'd like to give the author the benefit of the doubt and say that it went somewhere good, but I won't be finding that out anytime soon.I received this book through First Reads.

Vickey Kall took me on a unique travel experience not just to a place but to a time. For a week or so, as I read Death Speaker, I was transported to a north west area of Europe, a place called (Ancient) Gaul — at the time of the Celtic tribes and the Druids. There, I lived in a small village, seeing the village and life there through the eyes of a young girl named Emyn — and seeing the changes of the villages and the land as she lived her life. The joys, hardships, loves of this young girl a [...]

"When she looked again, Rialos’ clothes were being carried past. He stood naked, and Bodocnos helped him to kneel. Rialos’ hair looked soft and clean, as if he’d just come from bathing. Moonlight glistened on every muscle and sparkled on the dark hair that covered his chest, hair that narrowed to a single line below his navel, leading her eyes down."So begins the epic love story between Emyn and Rialos in Vickey Kall’s masterful historical novel, Death Speaker. Only one problem. When Emy [...]

I came away with very mixed feelings about Death Speaker, by Vickey Kall. I do think that it has been well researched, and that Vickey has captured something authentic of the mood of the time. But for some reason the book did not grab me, and there were times I struggled a little to persevere reading to the end. On balance, for me, four stars to recognise the effort and care that has gone into it. The lack of enjoyment is a personal thing, and other readers may well feel very differently.Briefly [...]

Read my full review @ bit/13TUX5j. ETA (1/20/13): As I posted my review on today, I noticed that this author REVIEWED HER OWN WORK under her real name. Death Speaker is written under a pseudonym. Nothing screams as being ethically challenged as presenting a false review to unsuspecting customers who depend on reviews to purchase their books. A note is on her review, as well as being informed of this infraction. Since informing of this, has removed the author's review written in her real name [...]

A very interesting informative book. A real page turner. It is full of valuable historical information as well as Druid magic. The main character is engrossing and we reAlly feel with her as she goes through her own life's trials. The ending is most touching and satisfying. A good book to curl up with by a blazing fire before sleep. This is a very interesting and informative novel. A real page turner. It is full of valuable historical information as well as Druid magic.
