4.5 stars"I'm not broken," he repeated. "Although at the moment" This was what came of violating the sentimentality quota. Everything he kept bottled inside him came out. He shut his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. "At the moment," he muttered numbly, "I may be coming a bit unraveled."Miranda Darling, seamstress and wig-maker, is at twenty years of age also the guardian of a twelve year-old boy. For their protection she works at times for the Patron, a shadowy figure who keeps the peace [...]

Every so often I go through my book shelves, making sure they're nice and tidy; books listed on all the right shelves, star rated and reviews written. That's what I was doing today, and imagine my surprise when I discovered that I had not written my review for this book! I was floored. Simply shocked that I had forgotten to do so.Well, it might have been quite some time since I read the book, and though I had forgotten to write the review, I have not forgotten the story, or how much I adored Sm [...]

Courtney Milan is my girl when it comes to historical romance, and she rarely disappoints. I'd been looking forward to Smite's book ever since I started the fabulous Turner series, and I am happy to report that I was extremely pleased with this story. It's been a little while since I read the story, so the details are a little fuzzy for me. But I loved the stellar writing, the hurt/comfort storyline, and the atypical MCs. I wish the narrator for this audiobook was stronger (the reviews of the au [...]

I'm just going to post a few thoughts from this truly fabulous book. ~Smite Turner. He is the type of tortured soul that you just want to hug but he refuses to let anyone in due to his childhood and the circumstances suffered from his crazy mother. His reasons for keeping all that fresh and foremost in his mind will make you tear up and love him all the more and see him as a wonderful, different, type of hero~Miranda Darling. Daughter of actors and fluent in disguises, she becomes a central part [...]

I have such fond memories of this book from when I first read it (pre-GRs) in 2014. There are three main reasons for the love.(1) This was the first Romance I read with an English legal-adjacent hero. Just a magistrate, mind, but I takes what I gets. (2) Smite, the bottled up, straight laced, stern, emotionally unavailable hero, is pretty much catnip to me. (3) Then there’s Miranda, Darling, who is his perfect foil and awesome in her own right. I can’t think of too many heroines who, when of [...]

And Smite shall be smote, er, rather smitten by loveCrimeny, I am so a fricking Courtney Milan fan girl / woman / old lady. The woman can write. And write well. I adore the tales she weaves and can never get enough. So basically here's what we get:Smite: tortured hero, abused by cray cray mommie dearest which totes reminds me why religious zealots scare the hell out of me. He has a firm grasp of what he considers right and wrong in his little black and white world. In fact, the dude kinda gets o [...]

4.5-starsUnraveled is a well-written story centered around family dynamics, friendship, poverty and injustice. Great character developmentSmite is an unconventional lord who doesn’t talk a load of bs. I don’t know how to do anything by halves, MirandaMiranda is a likable heroine who has common sense. ‘Do you know what they do to men like that?”They hang them. And it doesn’t matter how good the men are, or how much they keep to themselves, or how kind they are to inquiring children. It [...]

I was waiting anxiously for Smite's story, and I wasn't disappointed. I'm a sucker for the damaged heroes bit, and Smite is definitely a bit touched. And, shock of all shocks, I liked the heroine. Like, completely. I don't recall there being anything about her that I didn't like. She was straightforward and not weighed down by petty indecision and useless shame. She doesn't hold herself to some ridiculously high standard and claim some moral high ground all the time, which I find to be exceeding [...]

*potential spoilers*Each time I read a book by Courtney Milan I think that she can't possibly write anything better, and yet I'm always wrong. I'm going to say it again - Unraveled can't possibly be topped! Each chapter took us deeper into the psyche of Smite, traveling the long and disturbing road of his childhood, but cheering for him with each small victory that is revealed. I'm at a loss to describe how much I simply loved him as he made Miranda his. Oh he was definitely cruel at times but i [...]

i can't believe this series is over! i loved every word of it, one of the only historical romance series to have me so engrossed and captivated. it has all the cliche elements that make this genre so irresistible, yet the romances are set in quite unique settings and the plots are highly intriguing and different. strongly recommended!

I can’t believe that I only discovered Courtney Milan last year, but I’m so glad I did. It’s no wonder she’s become one of my favourite authors. Her stories are original and beautifully crafted, her characters are unique and compelling and her writing is so emotional, evocative and sensual. There was just enough of Smite in the previous books to intrigue me and I’ve been anticipating reading Unraveled ever since. The hero, emotionally scarred by past childhood events, is common enough i [...]

This book put me in a terrible predicament. In all honesty, I cannot rate a book, no matter how well written (and this one is) high when the subject matter is one I absolutely hate - that of a young innocent selling her body to someone for the promise of money, with the rest of the book centered on that sexual relationship. Unfortunately there was absolutely no reference whatsoever to that subject matter in the synopsis or I would have avoided it altogether, in my defense, however, until now, I [...]

This book was basically written for me: a sweet, sexy romance, with some action and lots of psychologically-based angst. Bonus points for including a bunch of stuff which I happen to like, including scenes at a theatre, food descriptions, characters with families and responsibilities, period-accurate birth control (it bugs me when I keep thinking that the heroine is going to get pregnant at any moment), and a "mistress for a month" agreement.I managed to read the last in the series first, but it [...]

I wish that I could give this 5 more stars!!! There are some books that become more than just a mere romance and this one of those books. The emotions of the book become so sharp that you have to stop reading for just a moment to clear your eyes and catch your breath. That was how Smite's and Miranda's romance went for me. At time is was sharp, beautiful and painful. Smite has closed himself off from everybody, because of his experiences in the past. But once he met Miranda, he couldn't hold him [...]

5 stars“I was hoping I could avoid the bit in the proposal where I lay out all the advantages of the match to you. There aren’t nearly enough of them. The truth is simply this: you can find a better man than I. God knows you wouldn’t have to look very hard. But I don’t believe you can find one who loves you more.”What a beautiful story! A satisfying ending of the trilogy. Before this book I wasn't sure about Smite, but here I really got to love him.Smite, aka ‘The Lord said in his he [...]

Historic Romance Not for meI didn't realize this was a "mistress" story. The kind where the heroine is forced into it due to poverty or hopeless conditions, while the hero flips back and forth between being nice and being a cold hearted jerk.Definitely not my cup of tea. I don't care how difficult someone's past is, I want my heroes to be steady and true. I can occasionally extend mercy, but not when he disrespects the heroine to the point that she gives up her dreams. The story has one bad word, [...]

Rating: 4.5 Stars It's official: Courtney Milan is my new favorite author. While I'm not known to have much luck in the historical romance genre, Milan subverts a plethora of overused tropes, making her novels enticingly real. Although I've only read three of her works so far, they've featured a doctor intent on using revolutionary means to prevent the spread of infection, a thug (of sorts) who has followed instructions without questioning them for years, and now a magistrate whose middle name m [...]

I am not giving a rating to this audio version of Unraveled. I liked reading the book a lot, but this narrator was simply unlistenable (is that a word?) to me. I don't know how to describe her voice -- British Munchkin with a bit of Yoda thrown in?? Everyone's tastes vary, so I'm sure that others will enjoy her narration. If you haven't read the Turner trilogy, I recommend it. All three novels are excellent!

Review Posted: Happily Ever After - ReadsBlog Rating: 4.5/5 starsI, along with many I’m sure, have been waiting for Smite’s story from the second I finished UNCLAIMED. His past was full of abuse from a mentally unstable mother. When his older brother, Ash, left home, he tried to take the attention off his younger brother Mark – unfortunately that put all her attention on Smite. He suffered so much and when he went to the town elders to voice his concerns about what his mother was doing and [...]

Originally reviewed here @ AngievilleSo I realized that while I spend rather a lot of time lauding the genuine charms of Courtney Milan's writing, I have only reviewed one of her books. And that one a novella. Personally, I think she's elevated the novella into an art form, but her novels are incredibly entertaining as well. It's high time I went back in the stacks and reviewed possibly my favorite of her full-length novels. Rose Lerner recommended this book to me early last year and, as it is t [...]

I liked the second book in this trilogy better, but still really enjoyed this book. The heroine is a scrappy thief character, and the hero is a slightly Asperger's magistrate. Non-traditional combo, but fun to read. There were some improbable twists, and the hero is kind of a jerk-off sometimes, but you at least understand why he's so psychologically damaged. And you definitely root for it to work out between them. You don't have to read them in order to know what's going on btw.

“I told you I know what broken is. That is broken—staring at the wall and weeping, while creditors hammer on the door and your troupe slowly slips away, stealing the best costumes in lieu of wages. When your friends leave you and you still cannot move, and nothing your daughter says can break you out of the spell. No man is broken because bad things happen to him. He’s broken because he doesn’t keep going after those things happen. When you told me about your mother, and how it made you [...]

Wow, what a terrific book and what a fabulous end to one of my favorite romance series. This book would undoubtedly have gotten a 5-star rating (or even 5-star+) if it weren't for the stupid Patron subplot and the horrific ending of it. It was just so stupid. Ugh, so annoying and stupid! The whole last I don't know last 1/5 (?) of the book veered all of a sudden off-course and was just silly. Was also disappointed with Marguerite's showing; I loved her from Book 1, but I have to say, here she [...]

HmmmUnraveled had me hooked. More sexy times than the first two in the series, but I still liked Ash and Mark's stories better. Smite and Miranda made a great couple and I enjoyed how well they communicated with each other. Even though Smite put me off with his starchy magistrate self, the way he shared his childhood with Miranda was very endearing. They were upfront with each other and worked through things. At first, when Miranda agreed to be his mistress for a month, I was like NOOOOOO!! But [...]

I read both the other two books in this series, Unveiled and Unclaimed, and I enjoyed it much more than either of them. The hero and heroine really come across as, well, real people. Neither of them do particularly stupid things. What they do, and what they say actually make sense, particularly the hero pushing away anyone who has ever shown him compassion or love. It really does work. I also liked the plot itself. It was intriguing and conjured up Dickens and the wasteland of Victorian slums, a [...]
