    Caldwell describes the give/take of materialism and idealism as it relates to the pursuit of the American dream. I really enjoyed his views on how the work ethic of our farming heritage provided the quality of life and necessary for idealism, and keeping materialism in check. His discussion of the eroding work ethic from the FDR welfare state and of his mention of industrial pursuits had me a little worried about a republican bent.
